Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and now the current President of the United States Mr. Barack Obama.
What do they all have in common?
Why… Brewing beer of course!
So How Did It All Start?
It all began Way back in 2011, When President Borack Obama purchased a home brewing kit for himself.(he’s got my vote) The first few batches of beer were brewed with help from a local brew shop, until the President learned that a few members of his staff were actually home brewers themselves. From there The President collaborated with the more experienced brewers on his staff and began to make changes to some of his favorite recipes to make them his own.
Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen.
One of the most noteworthy changes the President made was to adapt his new set of recipes to take advantage of all of the Honey that was being produced by the bee hives on the south lawn. Since starting his homebrewing hobby the President and White House chef Sam Kass have gone on to create 4 unique honey based brews, including their Honey Porter, Honey Ale, Blonde Honey Ale and Honey Brown Ale.
While It’s true that this isn’t the first time that a U.S. president has taken up this time honored craft, It is believed that President Borack Obama is the first president to actually brew his beer on white house grounds. In light of this historical first and to thank the President for bringing awareness to home brewing across America, The HomeBrewers Association honored the President and chef Sam Kass with lifetime memberships.
Re-creating The White House Ales
On August of 2012, two separate freedom of information act requests were sent to the white house asking that the President release his beer recipes to the public. A week later the president hosted a Q&A session on Reddit.com and confirmed for the first time that the beer recipes would be released soon!
silent1mezzo: What’s the recipe for the White House’s beer?
PresidentObama: It will be out soon! I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty.
A few weeks later, the recipe was made available on the white house blog page!
Since then NorthernBrewer has actually created extract kits for the White House Honey Porter and White House Honey Ale, which you can find HERE. Or if you would prefer, the official recipe has been included below.
